Later chosen by Coach Joe Byrd, who would become the 1992 U.S. Olympic Head Coach to box out of his stable. After placing in the National Golden Gloves and earning a silver medal in the Junior World nationals by the age of seventeen, he ended his amateur boxing career to pursue other interests with an approximate record of 75 wins and 12 losses.
